Canes Daily: Oilers Hire Jackson, Soderberg Announces Retirement
Following an action packed Wednesday that featured the extension of Troy Terry in Anaheim and Pittsburgh forward Drew O’Connor re-signing with the Penguins, Thursday was headlined by off the ice moves.
Edmonton hired Jeff Jackson, the agent of Connor McDavid, as the team’s CEO of hockey operations, Chairman Daryl Katz announced.
According to a team release, he will oversee operations of Edmonton’s NHL, AHL, and WHL hockey operations.
“This is a big commitment to the long-term success of our organization,” said Katz in the release. “Jeff has well-established relationships across the NHL, including a strong relationship with Ken Holland. He brings tremendous industry insight, knowledge and leadership built through a unique career experience that is ideal for this leadership role at OEGSE. He understands what it takes to build an elite organization for the modern NHL and will work closely with Ken and our whole team to put the Oilers in the best possible position to win.”
Jackson had spent the previous 13 years as an agent and also accrued an eight year playing career in the NHL.
While he will no longer serve as McDavid’s agent, Jackson’s presence seems to bode well for the 26-year old sticking around in Edmonton for the long haul.
After nine seasons in the NHL, Carl Soderberg officially announced his retirement. The 38-year old was drafted by St. Louis in the second round of the 2004 draft and debuted with Boston in 2013.
Soderberg appeared in 597 career games with four different organizations, recording 110 goals and 187 assists.
He last played during the 2020-2021 season, seeing action in 45 contests between Chicago and Colorado. The best season of his career came during the 2018-2019 campaign with the Avalanche, when he played in all 82 games and tallied 23 goals and 26 assists.
