After beginning the season on loan to the Syracuse Crunch, the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov has been recalled to join the NHL squad on the west coast road trip.

The move to add Kochetkov comes on the heels of Freddie Andersen’s injury on Tuesday in San Jose, when he left the game in the first period after taking a shot attempt directly to the mask. Netminder Antti Raanta relieved Andersen in net and stopped 12 of the 14 shot attempts faced en route to the victory.

According to Walt Ruff, Andersen did practice today ahead of the contest against Seattle on Thursday, but his status is still up in the air.

With Kochetkov joining the Hurricanes, it appears that either Andersen is doubtful or it makes sense to carry three goaltenders with both Andersen and Raanta having injury history.

Kochetkov has appeared in one regular season contest with the Crunch, earning the win after saving 31 of 34 shot attempts.

At the NHL level, he has seen action in 27 contests, compiling a 15-7-5 record and a .908 save percentage. He last appeared in a contest in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against New Jersey.

Kochetkov did produce a strong showing through training camp and the preseason and could make his season debut against the Kraken.
